Video: Hardcore off-roading in trucks fit for the apocalypse
Praga v Mercedes? Sounds like a track battle between two of the latest hypercars, right? Wrong. You will find no Bohema or AMG One exchanging lap-time blows in today’s video. What you will find, couldn’t possibly be further from it. Welcome to Truck Trial Oberottendorf 2019, where monster machines take to slopes of clay and pits of slurry for the ultimate off-road challenge.
We open with a green eight-wheeler that seems to be rocking back and forth in a slop-filled crag taking cracks at diving its rollover cage into the wall. Soon enough, with a few adjustments on the old angle of attack, the truck wins. We then see more six- and eight-wheelers bum-rush creeks, slide their way down horrifically-angled inclines and just generally use their heavily rutted tyres to rearrange the topography of the ground beneath them.
The soundtrack is the clunking of heavy-duty transmissions, the whoosh of diesel-fuelled turbochargers and the roar of the ground being manipulated under-tyre. What is it that’s so satisfying about making our way across impossible terrain and quite often failing? We are simple creatures.
