The Goodwood Racehorse Owners’ Group began in 1994 when John Dunlop was invited to become the first trainer for GROG, when serving as a Director at Goodwood Racecourse. Since then, 29 individual horses have carried the embroidered red and yellow silks of the group with no less than 17 having won one race or more. A big aspect to the GROG is the overseas racing tours, often voted by the Members as their favourite aspects of the membership. This was first introduced by the 10th Duke of Richmond who insisted that a party from Goodwood should go to California in show of support of the Goodwood Handicap run at Santa Anita. Thereafter the travels developed and this year members enjoyed a visit to the Basque region for racing from San Sebastián.
Members also receive many other benefits including a variety of social events, frequent updates on their horses plans and access to the Owners and Trainers Pavilion at Goodwood Racecourse at all meetings other than the Qatar Goodwood Festival.
Trainer Marcus Tregoning will work closely with GROG Racing Manager, Gail Brown, to purchase a yearling at the Tattersalls Yearling Sales. This will be the first horse that Tregoning will train for the group and ahead of the sales and new Flat season next year Tregoning is looking forward to the horse being in his care. He said: “I’m absolutely delighted to be training for the Goodwood Racehorse Owners Group. It is my favourite racecourse, a very exciting one, and hopefully we will have some success. It would be lovely to get a two-year-old to race here next season. We will purchase a horse at the upcoming Tattersalls Yearling Sales and hopefully we can have some good fun!”
